The player builds their character by spending acquired points to increase their ratings in the three areas. The points spent on Attributes and Abilities combine to determine a player's success or effectiveness in performing tasks such as using firearms, brawling, and lock-picking; for example, determining how accurate or how far the player can shoot, or if they can can hack a computer. Attributes represent physical (strength, dexterity and stamina), social (charisma, manipulation and appearance), and mental (perception, intelligence and wit). Abilities are talents (such as brawling and dodging), skills (such as firearms and melee) and knowledge (such as computers and investigation).[8][9] The player is initially assigned points to spend in the three areas, with the amount they can spend determined by clan; for example, the Brujah can spend the most points on physical and skill attributes. During character creation, each upgrade costs one point. The upgrade cost increases as the game progresses.[7]Each ability can be raised from zero to five, and it is impossible to accrue enough experience points to complete every skill (allowing the player to specialize or balance their character).[2][9] Experience points are gained by completing quests, finding items or unlocking secret paths, rather than killing enemies, and are used to increase or unlock the character's statistics and abilities.

The player is given five different control methods from which to choose: Method A features accelerometer steering (tilting the physical device to the left to turn left and to the right to turn right), auto accelerate and manual brake; Method B features accelerometer steering, manual accelerate and manual brake; Method C features touch to steer (where the player touches the left side of the touchscreen to turn left, and the right side to turn right), auto accelerate and manual brake; Method D features a virtual on-screen steering wheel to steer, auto accelerate and manual brake; Method E features a virtual steering wheel to steer, manual accelerate and manual brake. Within each of these options, the player can modify the amount of brake assist. In Methods A and B, the accelerometer sensitivity can also be modified.
In career mode, the player begins with only one available race; a "Hatch qualifier", in which they must complete a single lap in under one minute fifteen seconds to qualify for the next race. As each race is cleared, the next race becomes available. The game is divided into four sections, determined by the type of car; "Hatch", "Sedan", "Muscle" and "Exotic". Each section is further divided into three levels of difficulty; "Class C" is the easiest, followed by "Class B", with "Class A" being the hardest. Career races can include up to five AI opponents.

The game features rally cars that competed in the 1999 FIA World Rally Championship season (16 in the Championship Edition and 26 in the Expert Edition). There are over 80 original tracks which represent all of the rallies of the 1999 season, excluding Greece and Safari. The game modes include a time trial mode, an arcade mode which follows the traditional style of arcade games, V-Rally Trophy where the player competes against 3 AI opponents to see who can get the least time in all of the rallies. The championship mode follows the real-life example of Rallying with different stages in the rallies featured in the game. The V-Rally Trophy and Championship modes feature three distinct championships: European, World and Expert.
Weather conditions such as snow, rain and rallying in Daytime, Sunset and Night are included.
There is also a track editor where the player designs his/her own rally tracks. There is a Multiplayer mode which supports up to 4 players. The PlayStation version of the game features support for DualShock analog controllers.

It is a prequel to Vietcong, occurring three months before the events of that game. In Fist Alpha you play the main character of Sergeant First ClassDouglas Warren. All the members of the team from the original Vietcong are present initially except for Le Duy Nhut (Nick). The team's pointman and translator is Vietnamese SergeantNham Nguyen. He is killed in action during the attack on the Nui Pek base camp on 15 May 1967 and then he is replaced by Nhut.
In addition to the linear campaign, the game features several stand-alone single player maps and network and online multiplay.

The expansion packVietcong: Fist Alpha was released in 2004 and was bundled with Vietcong as Vietcong: Purple Haze for the PC.Vietcong: Purple Haze was also released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, ported by Coyote Games. An official add-on "Red Dawn" was released as a free downloadable content.[1] A sequel to the game, Vietcong 2, was released in 2005.
